II. KNOW THE DATES
GENERAL
- November 8, 2022
Voter Registration Deadline
- October 24, 2022 - Deadline for voters to submit their registration form by mail or in person to their County Auditor. South Dakota law does not allow voter registration via fax or email.
Ballot Request Deadlines:
- November 7, 2022 at 5 p.m. - Deadline to request and return a completed absentee ballot application to your County Election Official.
- Only military members and overseas citizens can submit their application via fax or email.
Ballot Return Deadlines:
- November 8, 2022 - Absentee ballots (via mail or in person) must be received by your County Election Official in enough time to deliver your ballot to your voting precinct before polls close. Contact your county auditor to determine your local deadline.
Registered voters in South Dakota who want to vote by absentee ballot this fall should submit an absentee ballot application to their local county auditor as early as possible. Absentee voting opens on September 23, 2022, and ballots are mailed within 48 hours of receiving an application.

IV. WHERE TO VOTE
Polling Location:
- School, firehouse or community center, use the South Dakota Secretary of State Voter Information Portal to find where to cast your ballot.
V. WHAT TO TAKE TO THE POLLS
Voter ID Laws:
- South Dakota requires a valid picture ID to vote, though they make some exceptions.
Accepted Credentials:
