Trump’s announcement

On January 29, former President Donald Trump held a rally in Conroe, Texas, where he pledged to pardon the individuals prosecuted for storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“If I run and I win, we will treat those people from January 6 fairly. We will treat them fairly, and if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons because they are being treated so unfairly... This hasn’t happened to all of the other atrocities that took place recently…It’s a disgrace.”

The announcement was met with a chorus of approval from his supporters. The former president criticized the current administration’s actions and investigation regarding the violent riots.
This is the farthest Mr. Trump has gone to support the rioters of January 6.

January 6 charges

At least 700 people were arrested in association with the assault on the Capitol. So far, only around 70 individuals have been prosecuted while the rest await trial or plea agreements.
Charges range from obstruction of an official proceeding to seditious conspiracy to assault. While the midpoint of sentences is 45 days, some rioters have received months or years in federal prison. Other rulings include home detention, fines, community service, and probation.

Reactions to Trump’s promise

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) stated:

“I’m so happy to hear President Trump say he will treat J6 defendants fairly and pardon them if needed. America must have a fair justice system and we must protect due process.”

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham (R) called the remarks inappropriate and stated that he does not wish to uphold the belief that defiling the Capitol is acceptable.
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) also disagreed with the promise of pardons, saying that those who assaulted the Capitol must be held responsible.

Trump’s comments continue

On Sunday, January 30, Trump expressed frustration that his Vice President, Mike Pence, did not throw out legitimate election results, bringing light to his efforts to interfere with the 2020 election. Mr. Trump said:

“Mike Pence did have the right to change the outcome, and now they want to take that right away. Unfortunately, he didn’t exercise that power, he could have overturned the election!”

This was the first time Trump portrayed his goal as overturning the election.
