What do you think of Texas Republicans’ new platform priorities?

What’s the story?
The Texas Republican Party held a convention in Houston last weekend, where thousands of delegates voted on what they think should be the party’s legislative priorities when Texas lawmakers reconvene in 2023.
Outlined in a 40-page document, one of the priorities included a section where delegates urged state lawmakers to hold a referendum "for the people of Texas to determine whether or not the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation."
The new platform also stated:
“Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1, of the Texas Constitution, the federal government has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified … Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto.”
In 1869, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White, holding that individual states cannot secede from the Union and that any attempt by Texas legislators to secede would be null.
The new platform is the latest example of the Republican party platform in Texas moving further to the right.
Other priorities included the false claim that President Joe Biden was not legitimately elected, dismissal of any gun control legislation, a section calling homosexuality “an abnormal lifestyle choice” and opposing any efforts to validate transgender identity, and more.
The platform is not legally binding, but instead a mission statement and outline of priorities for the Republican party over the next two years.
