2022 midterm elections
- On Tuesday, voters took to the polls to decide their next representatives, Senators, governors, and other state leaders. The ballot held 35 out of 100 Senate seats, which prior to the election, was split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Vice President Kamala Harris giving Dems the tie-breaking vote.
- All 435 House seats were on the ballot. Democrats, with 220 seats, controlled the House as well, while Republicans held 212 seats. 36 of the 50 states held elections for governor — previously, Republicans held the governorship in 28 states, and Democrats held it in 22.
- The Associated Press (AP) has yet to call which party controls Congress. The news company can’t make the call until one party has 218 seats in the House or enough required to control the Senate — 50 for Democrats and 51 for Republicans. It’s unclear when AP will be able to call the control of Congress as some states are still counting their votes. In this narrow race, Democrats are expected to lose the House, while control of the Senate could still go either way.
- As of Friday afternoon after the Tuesday elections, AP declared 193 House seats to Democrats and 211 to Republicans, and 48 Senate seats to Democrats and 49 to Republicans.
- The upcoming calls will determine whether Democrats keep their tight majority in the House and Senate or if Republicans will seize control of either, or both, chambers of Congress.
Battleground state results
- Georgia is holding a run-off election on Dec. 6 after neither Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock nor Republican challenger Herschel Walker received the majority of the vote. Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver received 2.1% of the vote, preventing Warnock and Walker from getting to 50% in this tight race. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp was reelected for governor, beating Democrat Stacey Abrams.
- In Pennsylvania, Democrat John Fetterman beat GOP candidate “Dr. Oz” for the state’s Senate seat, flipping PA’s Senate seat to blue. Democrat Josh Shapiro won the race for governor, defeating Doug Mastriano, a Trump-supported 2020 election denier.
- In Wisconsin, Democrat Tony Evers was reelected as the state’s governor. Republican Ron Johnson was reelected to the Senate in an extremely close race against Democrat Mandela Barnes.
- Michigan's Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson keep their seats.
What are we still waiting for?
- Arizona’s key races are still waiting to be called. Currently, in the Senate race, Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly is in the lead against Republican Blake Masters. Democrat Katie Hobbs is around one percentage point ahead of Republican Kari Lake in the race for governor.
- Republican Adam Laxalt leads Nevada's Senate race against Democrat Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto. The race for governor looks quite similar — Republican candidate Joe Lombardo stands ahead of Democrat incumbent Gov. Steve Sisolak.
